From a giant statue of Lenin's head to the enormous The Motherland Calls, here are 17 Craziest Communist Monuments. Subscribe to Knowledge Feed for awesome mysteries, discoveries, fun topics and all around AWESOME videos ! 8. Lenin’s Head Some images of Lenin were removed during the fall of communism but others, like this, the largest version of his head ever created, persist. Sitting in the middle of Ulan Ude (uday), a large city in Siberia the bronze sculpture is twenty-five feet tall and weighs a staggering 42 tons. In the winter time, it is jokingly referred to as the World's Biggest Jewish Head when snowfall sticks to the top of the skull creating a faux snow yarmulke (yammucah). 7. Podgaric (pod jerrik) Monument Fans of the Darth Vader statue will say that this communist monument in Croatia bears a striking resemblance to a ship that gave Vader a lot of trouble, The Millennium Falcon. Lying in the middle of a barren field near the small village of Podgaric in Croatia this sculpture was built in 1967 as a monument to the revolution of the people of Moslavina (mowslavina) and, as a symbol that Communists could point to with pride. After Yugoslavia fragmented, the monument was left to decay and attracted only a handful of visitors. It persists to this day as a constant reminder of a time long gone. 6. Mitrovica (mi trove ica) Miners Monument While it may look like a missing piece of Stonehenge, this monument in Kosovo is actually a tribute to Serbian and Albanian fighters from the area that lost their lives. The concrete memorial holds a replica mine cart that is a nod to the fact that many of those fighters worked in the area’s mines. Thousands visited the site in the 1980’s, but after the fall of the Socialist Republic in the early 1990’s, it began to fall off in popularity. 5. Giant Golden Chairman Mao Villagers in rural China erected this giant golden statue of Chairman Mao in late 2015 at the cost of just under four hundred thousand dollars. Mao was the communist leader and established the People’s Republic of China. Despite huge failures like the Big Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, both of which led to the deaths of millions of Chinese people Mao ruled the country until his death in September of 1976. His leadership lasted much longer than this statue, which according to a picture from January 2016 was torn down. 4. Grmec Like so many futuristic concrete monuments erected by Josip Tito, the former leader of Yugoslavia Grmec was built to represent the resilience of communism. Many of these monuments either garner tourist attention, have been destroyed or serve a new purpose. This monument sitting on Grmec Mountain, however, has been completely abandoned, and virtually no one ever visits. The structure is slowly being overrun by nature and no sign points to the site. 3. Petrova Gora Built in central Croatia the 12 story tall Petrova Gora Monument was once an impressive site. Today, however, it lays totally neglected and in a state of disrepair with some of its stainless steel plates stolen by vandals and locals who use them for building material. It does serve one practical use as a broadcasting tower for Croatian Television and T-Mobile Service. The main structure of the monument is cast in heavy concrete making it virtually indestructible which means the Petrova Gora will likely remain in some form for many years. It lies on a mountain of the same name that contains an incredible network of underground tunnels and chambers that were used as a secret field hospital during World War Two. 2. Mother Motherland Standing 340 feet tall this statue is the 18th tallest in the world which may not seem too crazy until you realize the Statue of Liberty at 305 feet only ranks 42nd. The raised shield in the stainless steel monuments left-hand displays the State Emblem of the Soviet Union for everyone in the area to view. It sits on a complex whose 300,000 exhibits represent the largest museum in Ukraine. Construction of Mother Motherland took place from 1979 to 1981 and was highly controversial at the time due to its massive cost that many people felt could have been used for more worthy causes. 1. The Motherland Calls Built to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad The Motherland Calls in Volgograd was declared the largest statue in the world upon its completion in 1967. Today it is the second tallest statue of a woman on the planet and remains one of the most iconic symbols in all of Russia. The figure measures 171 feet, and the sword is 108 feet long. The statue represents a complex engineering feat due to its characteristic posture with the sword raised high in one hand. Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200-day long battle lead from the bottom of the hill up to The Motherland Calls.

A 20-metre statue of Soviet dictator Vladimir Lenin has been taken down in the Ukrainain city of Zaporizhia. The dismantling process took more than 30 hours. Several hundred people gathered at the central square to see the toppling. A German national is reportedly expressing interest in buying the monument. The Zaporizhia statue is the biggest bust of Lenin in Ukraine. It was installed in 1964. In recent years, local activists made two attempts to take it down. In early February 2016 the city council approved its dismantling. Dozens of statues of Communist revolutionary Lenin have been toppled in Ukraine since 2013. Their falling has been greeted as a symbol of Ukraine's push to break from its Soviet past. The first demolitions coincided with the pro-EU Maidan protests against Moscow-backed former President Viktor Yanukovych. A new statue of Josef Stalin has been erected in the city of Lipetsk -- the latest example of the gradual rehabilitation of the Soviet leader's legacy in Russia. Some Russians are furious that the crimes of the Stalin era are being whitewashed by current officials, but others are eager to claim the dictator as a national hero. (RFE/RL's Current Time program)
