The point of our video is not to promote racism or to make fun of this issue, but to show how pervasive and institutionalized racism was in our culture just a short time ago. I do not own rights to the music in this video. Any content used is intended for educational purposes. Blackface allowed actors and artists to hide behind a caricature while protesting and mocking the powerful without fear of retaliation. Minstrel performers could safely question authority while claiming to be acting out authentic African American expressions. The primary function of blackface wasn’t just to invoke the “other,” but also to act as a mask. “The performers are maskers whose assumed disguises facilitate ironic poses that paint figurative portraits,” Finson observed. In times of carnival, celebrants often transvested, or wore the clothes of others to take on their identity. A common worker might dress up like an aristocrat or deliberately dress in low garb to become a pirate, a bum, a convict, and so on. Blackface became a mainstay of stage and later film performance in the twentieth century. Most often blackface was used as a comic device that played on the stereotypes of black laziness, ignorance, or crass behavior for laughs. Sometimes blackface was used simply to portray black characters. These erroneous portrayals of black life were seen by thousands of Americans in the decades before the Civil War. Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln attended and enjoyed minstrel shows. President Lincoln had the Union band play Dixie at Lee’s surrender; the comic dialogues in Huckleberry Finn are reminiscent of minstrel performances. Minstrelsy became America’s first national popular culture. Music The Virginians – Nothing Could Be Sweeter (1927) Works Cited B. (2012). 3 stooges in black face. Did these animated movies take things a step too far? Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/ho3Hg6 Children love a good animated film that stirs their creativity and pushes their imagination to even greater depths. But what happens when kids films push the boundaries too far? Of course, parents love when Disney and Pixar throw in some adult humor their little ones won’t pick up on, but then there’s just plain over the top. We’re talking Minions grinding up on each other, skeleton animals, violence, sexuality, or subjects that may push the boundaries for youngins. Tom Selick and Tim Burton are known for pairing up and making creepy children’s films that often go too far. Movies that illicit nightmares and shadows in the dark. “James and the Giant Peach” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” did just that, but what were the specific moments that may have gone too far? Not to mention the mother who steals eyes and souls from children in “Coraline”...we mean, is that really a kids type vibe? What about the Disney film where a baby witness his mother being killed, or “Up” where the poor old man has to live his life after his one true love dies? Spike Jonze made an adult film that was marketed for children in “Where The Wild Things Are” and Dreamworks “Antz” really needed a profanity check...there’s even a compilation of all the swear words. That isn’t even mentioning the full-on war in that film. All these over the top moments that are definitely too much for children will be revealed in this video. We’ll show you what crazy and absurd films are out there and why they may be too much for little hearts and brains. Now let’s go and see all these shockingly overt kids film! Ain’t nothing like dealing with a child with nightmares...thank you, Burton. NOTE: I do not own any of the clips. These films are the property of Warner Bros., Disney, MGM, Paramount, etc. This video is being posted for educational purposes. It is a fairly comprehensive review of an animation trend in the first half of the 20th century. Despite the stereotype that cartoons are intended for kids, the animated films of the 1930s, '40s and '50s were largely geared toward adults. The cartoonists also managed to slip in some pretty racy material.
